Metal Church has never been a band content to stand still. Through lineup changes, hiatuses, and the tragic loss of vocalist David Wayne, the Washington-based outfit has consistently found ways to push forward. Dead to Rights, their 2026 offering on Rat Pak Records, is the latest chapter — and it's one of their most energized in years.
A New Lineup, A Familiar Fire
The big news surrounding Dead to Rights is the new lineup. Brian Allen (Vicious Rumors) steps in on vocals, bringing a powerful, classic-metal delivery that fits the Metal Church sound without trying to imitate his predecessors. David Ellefson — yes, that David Ellefson from Megadeth — handles bass duties, and his presence adds both credibility and a locked-in low-end groove that anchors every track. Drummer Ken Mary (Fifth Angel, Flotsam and Jetsam) rounds out the new rhythm section with precision and power. Mastermind Kurdt Vanderhoof remains the creative core, writing all the material and keeping the band's identity intact.
The Songs
Dead to Rights wastes no time. Opener "Brainwash Game" comes out swinging with crunching riffs and Allen immediately proving he belongs here. "F.A.F.O." is a standout — aggressive, direct, and built on a riff that sticks with you. The title track "Dead to Rights" hits that sweet spot between classic Metal Church heaviness and a modern punch that doesn't feel forced.
"Feet to the Fire" and "Deep Cover Shakedown" keep the momentum going, while "Heaven Knows (Slip Away)" shows the band's ability to write a hook without sacrificing weight. The back half of the album holds up well, with "Wasted Time" and "My Wrath" rounding out the standard edition before the bonus track "Blood and Water" closes things out.
Bottom Line
Dead to Rights is a statement album — proof that Metal Church still has something to say and the firepower to say it. The new lineup gels better than expected, Brian Allen is a legitimate find, and Vanderhoof's songwriting is as sharp as it's been in a long time. If you wrote them off after the last few records, this one is worth your time.
