Jungle Rot has been doing one thing for over three decades — grinding out heavy, no-nonsense death metal from Kenosha, Wisconsin — and they have never once apologized for it. Cruel Face of War, their latest on Unique Leader Records, is exactly what you expect from this band, and that is precisely the point.
The Rot Riff Machine Rolls On
Dave Matrise and company have never chased trends and they are not starting now. What made early Jungle Rot records like War Zone and Skin the Living so devastating was their commitment to the groove — thick, mid-paced riffs that hit like a freight train and refuse to let go. Cruel Face of War carries that same DNA. The album opens with a brief intro before "Apocalyptic Dawn" kicks the door in and sets the tone for everything that follows. This is meat-and-potatoes death metal at its most confident.
Standout Tracks
"Maniacal" is an early highlight — the kind of track that reminds you why you got into death metal in the first place. Pure aggression, locked-in groove, no wasted space. "Suffer in Silence" follows a similar blueprint but with a slightly slower burn that makes the payoff hit harder. "Radicalized" is another standout, aggressive and direct with a riff that sticks with you long after the album is done.
Worth calling out: "Horrors Vile" features Dave Ingram, longtime vocalist of Benediction, and it is a natural fit — his voice pairs well with Matrise's delivery and the track is one of the album's heaviest moments. It is the kind of guest spot that actually adds something instead of just being a name on the back cover.
The album closes with "Rot Riffs" — and yes, that title tells you everything you need to know — followed by "Hollow Husk," which sends the record out on a suitably brutal note.
Bottom Line
Cruel Face of War is Jungle Rot doing what Jungle Rot does, and they do it better than almost anyone. This is not a reinvention — it is a reaffirmation. Longtime fans of the band will find exactly what they came for, and newcomers get a master class in straightforward death metal done right. Essential listening for fans of the genre.
